Minutes of the Regular Monthly SBDM Council Meeting for November 2017

1. Opening Business

Motion Passed:  Approval of agenda November 08, 2017 passed with a motion by Mr. Nathan Gambrell and a second by Ms. Betsy Webster and the consensus of the council. 

 

1.*. Minutes Approval  

 

Motion Passed:  Approval of minutes from October 11, 2017 passed with a motion by Mrs. Tracy McMillian and a second by Mrs. Lisa Stedam and the consensus of the council. 

 

1.*. Good News Report  

 

Rationale:

1. Congrats to our volleyball team for their excellent season and their district runner-up finish!

2. Both of our cross country teams advanced to the state meet on Saturday, November 4th.  The girls placed 2nd in the region, while the boys placed 5th.  Freshman Allison Bourne was the individual region champion!  The girls went on to place 8th in the state, with Allie Bourne placing 4th overall!  Colton Stedam led the boys by running an 18:06 at the state meet.

3. Congratulations to our football team for their 7-3 season and earning a home football game vs. Washington County on Friday, Nov. 3.

4.  Our Sources of Strength team has begun rolling out its work with the student body and has initiated its first project, 21 days of gratitude, around the building.

3.*. Approval of 2018-19 course catalog  

 

Discussion:

Mr. Wainscott presented the council with teacher recommendations for the 2018-2019 course catalog. He discussed changes/additions the teachers would like to make in each department. Mr. Kline recommended to the council to remove the family/consumer science program. He also recommended to the council to approve the addition of environmental science/ natural resources, education and e-commerce pathways. Mr. McCarthy, current business teacher, asked the council to add Digital Literacy as a requirement for graduation. This request was tabled until later in the year.  The Math department proposed to the site-based council for review of several additions/changes to the currently offered classes/pathways. 

 

Motion Passed:  Site-based council to adopt career pathways in environmental science and natural resources, education, and e-commerce. Also, the council agrees to dissolve family and consumer science pathways.  passed with a motion by Mrs. Tracy McMillian and a second by Ms. Betsy Webster.

Motion Passed:  The school council moves to adopt the following courses into its course catalog for the 2018-2019 school year: Science Fiction Science, Music Theory, and an Integrated Math Sequence that meets all state graduation requirements. In addition, the school council agrees to add ag-communication, floriculture, landscape and turf management, animal technology, wildlife resources, and forestry. Additionally, the school council moves to drop Algebra 1.5 from the course catalog.     passed with a motion by Mrs. Laura  Dorton and a second by Mrs. Lisa Stedam.

Motion Passed:  The school council moves to adopt the Math Visioning Project curriculum found on the KDE website as its integrated math curriculum for grades 9-12. This will replace Engage New York as the common core curriculum for math.  passed with a motion by Mr. Nathan Gambrell and a second by Ms. Betsy Webster and the consensus of the council. 

 

3.*. Approval of 2017-18 CSIP goals  

 

Discussion:

Mr. Kline presented the council with the CSIP goals for 2017-2018 school year for review.   He asked the council to take home the TELL survey and review prior to a called meeting on November 29th. 

Discussion will continue at a called SBDM meeting on November 29th at 3:30pm.

Motion Passed:  Approval of Activity Account Report for October 2017. passed with a motion by Mrs. Tracy McMillian and a second by Mrs. Lisa Stedam and the consensus of the council.

Motion Passed:  Approval of Section VI for October 2017 pending the result of the Math department inquiry.  passed with a motion by Mrs. Lisa Stedam and a second by Ms. Betsy Webster and the consensus of the council.
