Mr. Mojo is visiting OCHS!

Mr. Travis Brown, also known as "Mr. Mojo," is visiting Owen County to work with students to develop an effective anti-bullying campaign. at OCHS and MBMS.  Mr. Brown specializes in working with schools to create effective ways to decrease bullying in school cultures.

The Owen County HS Principal's Advisory Council, a group of student leaders who work with Mr. Kline to improve the school, have made the discussion of and decreasing of bullying at OCHS a priority for this school year.  They are forming an anti-bullying student taskforce that will work with Mr. Brown to create a campaign to both make students aware of what bullying can do, but also what students-and teachers and parents-can do about it.

We want to thank our Herff-Jones representative (who many of you know if you've purchased a class ring or a letter jacket) for helping us to underwrite Mr. Mojo's visit on September 23rd.  During the visit Mr. Mojo will have an all-school assembly at OCHS in the morning, after which he will work with the OCHS anti-bullying student taskforce, then after lunch he will visit MBMS for an all-school assembly as well!

To get things started, we need information from our students about their experiences.  To get this feedback, we are asking all of our students to go to this link https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/OCHS and complete the survey there.  Thanks for your help!

New School Year Brings New School Start and Ending Times

Parents and Rebels-

Summer is just about over!  Stores are getting busy with back to school shopping, and we are putting the finishing touches on summer cleaning and repairs at OCHS...we are excited to begin the 2013-14 school year!

One change this year is that we will be starting and ending the high school instructional day 15 minutes earlier.  The day will run from 7:45 AM until 2:45PM.  The building will be open in the morning beginning at 7:25AM, with the first bell to lockers and first period ringing at 7:37AM.  First period will begin at 7:45AM sharp; we want to begin the year on a great note, so please work to be present every day and on time each morning!

We hope to make things a little easier in the morning by beginning to offer "grab and go" breakfast options.  If you are pressed for time in the morning, this will afford you the chance to still grab a light breakfast and take it with you to first period...just remember to throw your trash away when you are done!

Enjoy the last couple of weeks of summer break, and start getting excited about living the Rebel Life this fall!

Mr. Kline

Get Involved! It's NOT Too Late!

Fall activities and sports are beginning practices, and you can be a part of the team!  We want all of our students to GET INVOLVED!  If you are interested in participating in a sport, please contact the coach of the sport (you can call the school at 502-484-5509 and we'll be glad to get you in touch!) or our athletic director, Coach TJ Wesselman (same number) and we'll get you going!  You will need a current physical to participate, but we'll work with you to take care of everything else!

For those of you who are interested in our clubs, we will use the month of August to take care of sign-ups and paying any applicable dues; the first club day will be Wednesday, September 4th!  We are looking forward to a great year at OCHS!

The month of September contains the first round of bench mark testing for high school students.  During the first two weeks of the month, 9th and 10th graders will be involved in MAP testing.  This assessment provides students, parents and teachers a look at the basic skill level of each student.   Very often, these scores help teachers and parents become aware of areas in which a student needs extra help.

On Tuesday, September 17th, all students except seniors will be involved in an assessment.  Freshman will be taking a "practice PLAN" test.  Sophomores will be taking the PLAN.  Finally, juniors will be taking the ASVAB test.

Both the PLAN and ASVAB have benchmark scores which, if met, allow the student to reach at least a part of college/career readiness benchmarks.

Questions about benchmarks??? Contact Mrs. Anne Kline 502-484-4150
