Owen County Schools is updating its District Technology Usage Guidance as part of a broader effort to reduce passive screen time while ensuring students use technology purposefully to meet state standards.
The change, rooted in the district's strategic plan and its ongoing focus on engaged, aligned instruction, will shift how devices are distributed and utilized in classrooms this upcoming school year. Rather than assigning a device to every student, classrooms will instead be equipped with devices available for intentional, meaningful learning experiences. The exception applies to Owen County High School dual credit and credit recovery students, who will continue to receive individually assigned Chromebooks. Dual credit students will receive their devices during Open House, in keeping with the requirements of the district's post-secondary partners.
District leaders emphasized that technology remains one of many valuable instructional tools available to teachers and students, but stressed the importance of balance.
"This shift reflects our belief in a balanced approach to technology, where devices are available as a meaningful instructional tool while reducing passive, all-day screen time," the district said.
Additional details on the instructional use of Chromebooks will be shared in the coming weeks. Families and staff are encouraged to watch for further communication as the district continues working to prepare students for success while promoting responsible, appropriate technology use.
