As we move through this school year, the district is renewing its focus on regular attendance, not as a rule to enforce, but as a promise to families that your child matters here and so does every day they're with us.
Why Attendance Matters So Much
It doesn't take a lot of missed school to put a student at risk. According to the Kentucky Department of Education, missing just 10% of school days, about 17 days a year, or fewer than two days a month is enough to make a child "chronically absent." Chronic absenteeism is strongly linked to lower reading and math proficiency, disengagement from school, and a higher likelihood of falling behind grade level.
The good news is that attendance is one of the most fixable challenges a family can face, especially with a little support and planning.
Life Happens and We Understand
We know that keeping kids in school every day isn't always simple. Illness, transportation trouble, family stress, and unexpected life events can all get in the way. That's why our schools are asking families to work with us, not around us, when life gets complicated. A few simple habits can make a big difference:
1. Practice steady routines for bedtime and morning so school mornings feel predictable.
2. Schedule medical and other appointments after school hours whenever possible.
3. Check in with school staff about community resources available to your family.

One easy step families can take is simply keeping a record of missed days and the reasons behind them. Tracking this information not only helps parents stay aware of how many days have added up, it also gives school staff the context they need to offer the right kind of help before small gaps become a bigger problem.
